For the sixth consecutive year, Catalonia has been a world leader in human transplants and organ donation. From the beginning of 2019 until November, about 1.200 transplants and 458 organ donations have been recorded. According to Jaume Tort, director of Organitzaci\u00f3 Catalana de Trasplantaments (OCATT<\/a>)<\/em>, an organization rooted in the Catalan Health Care System, this success is due to several factors, such as: the raising awareness within the general population over the possibility to donate organs, the solidarity and faith in the healthcare system and the coordination model between the different parties that make the human transplants and organ donations possible. The Donation in Controlled Asystole Program, which concerns organ donations after circulatory death, has also been key to this success; only in 2018 about the 34% of the transplanted organs in Catalonia came from asystole donors.<\/p>\n

Thanks to some improvements in organ extraction, preservation, and mechanical assistance, as well as the new forms of transplants, many organs that would not have been selected for transplantation in the past, have been retained for transplantation.<\/p>\n
